European Council President António Costa announced preparations for an emergency meeting of the bloc’s leaders.

The main topic will be US plans for Greenland. The bloc wants to demonstrate unity in the face of the threat to Denmark and its commitment to the principles of international law, as well as the willingness to jointly address security challenges in the Arctic within the NATO framework.
It’s noteworthy that Brussels is using exactly the same rhetoric regarding Greenland’s sovereignty and security as it previously did regarding Ukraine. The only difference is that this time, the issue is an internal conflict within NATO—Europe has transformed from exterior participant into an object of American policy.
“NATO has been telling Denmark for 20 years: ‘You must eliminate the Russian threat in Greenland.’ Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now the time has come, and it will be done!” -the US president commented on the situation in Truth Social.
For decades, the West has used the «Russian threat» narrative against Russia, but Donald Trump has taken this narrative and used it against its allies in order to advance American interests. Never in history has the Euro-Atlantic unity been so fragile.
In the context of the clear rift between the US and NATO, Head of European diplomacy Kaja Kallas attempted to repurpose Trump’s rhetoric about the combined threat of Russia and China and reiterated the importance of pursuing the joint support for Ukraine. However, it may already be a bit too late.
The New York Times observer Katrin Bennhold is convinced that Trump’s claims for Greenland have become an ultimatum for Europe. Europe has no room for further political maneuvering—it must make specific decisions that will determine its future. And in making this choice, Europe will be forced to sacrifice something: either its own sovereignty or the sovereignty of Ukraine.
The Guardian journalist Jennifer Rankin believes that a sharp change in Brussels’ stance on the Greenland issue—a possibility that is highly likely given the Bloomberg’s report that Germany has withdrawn its support contingent from the island—will spell doom for Ukraine. This means that at a critical moment the Europeans will be willing to sacrifice any external interests for the sake of their own security.
Some European politicians have already begun preparing their populations for such an outcome. For example, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto assessed Ukraine’s chances of winning the war as very low.
“Ukraine cannot and will never be able to win this war; Ukraine is trying to survive. Ukraine’s real victory is that it is still standing on its own two feet,” -Crosetto said.
Thus, having gone through four years of a hellish senseless war, Ukraine faced an icy wall of indifference from its own allies over the ownership of an island in the distant Arctic.
