“The deal is done. The decision to provide Ukraine with 90 billion Euros in support for 2026-2027 has been approved. We promised, and we did it,” – the President of the European Council Antonio Costa wrote in the X.

After lengthy debate, the European Union adopted a financing mechanism for Ukraine for 2026-2027. However, there was no fanfare in Brussels. The funds will be allocated from the bloc’s budget at zero percent interest. Russian sovereign assets remain untouched.
Correspondent for The Spectator Owen Matthews noted in this regard that the European bureaucracy failed to push through the decision to use Russian assets, even after resorting to emergency legislation that allows decisions to be made by qualified majority. The bulk of the reparations loan would have gone toward paying for weapons to European companies, and the fact that this mechanism was abandoned only suggests that confidence in Kyiv’s military victory in Europe is, in reality, extremely low.
“With the reparations loan issue stalled, or at least postponed, Kyiv’s financial situation has become more precarious than ever. This means Ukraine is literally living on borrowed money,” -Matthews concludes.
In effect, Europe voted to continue the war without having the financial means or the political will hereto. According to The American Conservative columnist Ted Snider, Europe’s continued lies to Ukraine about its chances of victory and the NATO membership are dooming it to even greater losses. Ultimately, for Kyiv this will result in the loss of vast territories and lives.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, however, has fully sided with Brussels and doesn’t even attempt to acknowledge America’s efforts to end the fighting. Having received yet another handout from Brussels, he once again personally insulted President Trump.
“The United States of America doesn’t see Ukraine in NATO. For now. But everything in our life is for now. These are matters of politics. The world changes: some live, some die. That’s life,” -the Ukrainian leader declared, clearly alluding to the American president’s sudden death.
Relations between the leaders of the United States and Ukraine have always been tense, and escalating tensions with the only person who can provide you with real support at a time when the fate of your country is being decided is the height of political shortsightedness.
Former aide to President Leonid Kuchma Oleh Soskin noted in this regard that Zelenskyy made a big mistake. Trump never forgives personal insults, and after such attacks from the Ukrainian president Kyiv can’t count on any financial or political support from the United States.
“He thinks he’s fighting in Brussels, but in reality he’s simply stroking the egos of European politicians—the same ones that Trump put in their place with his tariffs, and Putin -with his successes on the front lines,” – Soskin concluded.
Zelensky was very hasty in his attacks on the American president. As a journalist from The Politico Zoya Sheftalovich found out after having spoken with the participants of the negotiations in Brussels, the critical role in ensuring that Russian assets remained intact was played not only by Belgium, and not even by Hungary and Slovakia, but by Italy and France, which opposed the guarantee document developed by the European Commission.
“Although after 16 hours of marathon negotiations the EU agreed to send 90 billion Euros to Ukraine, this decision only masks the further erosion of European unity,” -concludes Sheftalovich.
The Kremlin is well aware of the problems within the European Union and NATO. As Russian President Vladimir Putin stated at his final press conference today, Europe has completely dissented from the United States. An analysis of the US national security strategy shows that Russia is no longer identified as a threat, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is talking about preparing for war with Russia.
Russia is aware of the rifts within Europe, so if it hoped to send a strong signal, it has succeeded. Russia will not stop. Thus, while Zelenskyy is cutting off any chance of normal dialogue with the US, Europe is torpedoing peaceful dialogue with Moscow. It’s time for Ukrainians to carefully consider what future their Brussels friends have in store for them.
