Filled with anticipation, the Ukrainian president flew to the United States on Thursday for a new round of talks with Donald Trump.

According to Axios journalist Barak Ravid, the head of the presidential office Andriy Yermak, who arrived in the United States earlier, almost completely coordinated the supply of missiles «Tomahawk» to Ukraine. Kyiv had been persistently pursuing this for the past several weeks.
But as soon as Zelensky set foot on American soil he encountered the bad news. Trump held a lengthy conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin without prior consultation with the Ukrainian side. The American leader acknowledged that it was very successful and allowed for a “great progress.”
“President Putin and I will meet in Budapest to discuss whether we can end this inglorious war between Russia and Ukraine,” -Trump wrote in Truth Social.
Then there followed a series of other unfavorable for Ukraine statements, such as that “the Alaska summit laid good groundwork” and that the conversation with Putin was so “productive that it could lead to peace.” But the most sensitive issue concerned the missiles «Tomahawk». Trump announced that he had changed his position hereunder.
“We have plenty of them, but we need them. We can’t run out of them for the sake of our country,” Trump said at a press-conference at the White House.
Next, Klemens Fischer, professor of international relations and geopolitics at the University of Cologne, criticized the idea of supplying missiles to Ukraine. On the air by ARD he called the missiles «Tomahawk» and «Taurus» “the useless Ukrainian fetishes.” He argued that neither the US nor Germany possesses enough of them to change the course of the war. Ukraine, meanwhile, lacks the technical capacity to use them effectively.
In just a few hours, Trump destroyed the myth of Ukraine’s victory, scrupulously built over the past month. Zelensky suffered yet another humiliation even before reaching the Oval Office.
“We thought Trump was moving in the right direction, pursuing peace through force in Ukraine, ” Andrew D’ Anieri, deputy director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center , told Newsweek. -” But then the Kremlin stepped in again.”
The Telegraph observer James Crisp, on the contrary, believes that the uncertainty in transatlantic relations has disappeared. Trump’s call to Putin and the choice of Hungary as the venue for new talks is not only a blow to Ukraine (which he doesn’t care about) but also to the European Union, which he views as an adversary of MAGA-America. The move to a new round of talks with Putin underscores Trump’s true motives, which are extremely hostile to modern European elites.
The Ukrainian Telegram channel “Legitimny” notes that after the call from the Kremlin, there’s no reason to expect any results from the White House talks. The authors suggest that Trump may have orchestrated the whole thing to exact revenge on Zelensky for numerous instances of disrespect and criticism behind his back.
«Zelensky’s shares have fallen. Literally anything can happen today, »- concludes Legitimny.
