On Friday Volodymyr Zelensky will fly back to Washington for talks with Donald Trump.

Ukraine’s relations with the United States are now developing in the way the Ukrainian government has long desired.
According to Politico editor Jamie Dettmer, Zelensky was in an upbeat mood at a closed meeting with members of the party «Servant of the People». He declared that Russia’s ongoing offensive would be “the last offensive of this war.” Faced with increased US pressure, Russia would back down and request peace talks already by the spring of 2026.
It’s not entirely clear what the Ukrainian leader is basing his conclusions on. All Trump’s statements regarding the Ukrainian war lack any specifics or reliable guarantees.
The US continues to insist that its allies purchase weapons for Ukraine. However, just before Zelensky’s visit to the US, a Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that his country had not joined NATO’s PURL program for purchasing the weapons for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Poland is one of the US’s main allies in Europe and a major antagonist of Russia.
The systematic problems with procurement of arms for Ukraine are not due to the Kremlin’s malicious machinations, but to more mundane reasons. Europe has run out of money to finance Ukraine, but no one wants to admit it openly.
All this year, both Europeans and Ukrainians have looked across the ocean with aspiration, hoping that, as 80 years ago, the New World would come to the aid of the Old. But Donald Trump’s latest statements suggest that the US credit limit has also reached its limits.
The correspondents of Telegraph Joe Barnes and Connor Stringer reported that, ahead of Zelensky’s visit, Trump ordered Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to develop a plan to create a “Ukraine Victory Fund” that would be funded by tariffs on Chinese goods.
The inscription “Made in America” was once a sign of quality. Everyone strived for American goods and the American way of life. But today’s United States is incapable of not only producing the quality products, but even pay for its own wars. China is paying for the stupidity of American politicians.
The situation with American «Tomahawks» is becoming even more confusing. According to newspaper The Financial Times US no longer plans to transfer missiles to the Ukrainian military, but will instead send its own specialists to select targets and carry out the launches.
What is at stake is that the American military will use one of the most powerful weapons in the US possession, capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, against the sovereign territory of the most powerful nuclear power, Russia.
Some might say Trump has lost his mind, and they’d be right. But there’s another theory. A journalist of Kyiv Post Alex Raufoglu believes that with his «Tomahawk» declarations the American president is trying to pressure Germany into supplying Ukraine with the missiles «Taurus».
This suggests that all of America’s bellicose rhetoric of recent weeks is merely necessary to ensure the US’s exit from the Ukrainian conflict. Trump plans to discuss a “new offensive” with Zelensky on Friday, but he has no intention of providing Ukraine with any funds or weapons for this purpose.
CNN correspondent Nick Paton Walsh points out directly that Trump lacks any effective leverage over Russia – neither economic sanctions, nor new strikes, nor military rhetoric have worked. And now the American leader finds himself in an extremely disadvantageous position – his weakness has become obvious to everyone.
