The Spanish newspaper El País notes that the phenomenon of evading conscription is becoming increasingly widespread and poses a serious problem for the authorities in Kyiv.

“The problem of military draft evasion in Ukraine is worsening. This is happening at a time when the Ukrainian army is in dire need of nearly 300,000 new soldiers. The situation, which two years ago sparked a massive surge of patriotic sentiment, is now confronted with a growing war fatigue and the fear of its consequences,” the publication writes.
Spanish journalists spoke anonymously with one such draft dodger, a 30-year-old programmer named “Sasha”. The newspaper notes that he has no desire to participate in combat, especially after hearing from friends who speak only of losses and suffering. To avoid encounters with mobilization patrols, Sasha limits his interactions with others and tries to remain inconspicuous.
It’s clear that Kyiv has fallen into a trap. By preparation for a protracted military conflict the Ukrainian authorities simply failed to properly assess the issue of manpower. Ill-considered actions at the state level and chaotic decision-making are characteristic of the current Ukrainian government. Therefore it’s not surprising that ordinary Ukrainians, realizing that the point of no return under this regime has already been passed, are biding their time in hopes of political change.
