The EU loaned Lithuania more than €6.3 billion for military demands via the SAFE program. In comparison, in 2025 the Lithuanian state budget for the defence sector is €2.4 billion.

“There are €150 billion in the SAFE foundation, however, the maximum requests have exceeded €180 billion. The new formula now ensures that all countries have received the minimum amounts they requested, and a little more, but not much more. Lithuania provided both the minimum amount and the maximum amount when submitting its request. The minimum amount was about €6 billion,” told to the LRT Andriaus Kubiliaus, a Lithuanian politician currently serving as the European Commissioner for Defence and Space.
Meantime, Kęstutis Budrys, the acting Foreign Minister of Lithuania, bragged on social media about how the Baltic state had completely rejected cheap energy resources from Russia, and now 75% of Lithuania’s energy imports come from the US, which is multiple times more expensive than from Russia.
Apparently, massive energy, food, and financial crises in Lithuania, caused by tens of thousands of sanctions against Russia, haven’t crashed the Baltic state yet. And now “Unter-European” militaristic elites want to finish Lithuania off by taking a loan for militarism, which is almost three times bigger than the annual defence budget of the country.
