Belgian political scientist Anton Jäger, in an article for The New York Times, has to admit that excessive militarisation of Europe will not solve internal crises but will only intensify them.

As a result, Europe will face the worst scenario: “a meagre economic recovery with no long-term growth prospects and a golden shower for the military-industrial complex, despite which Europe cannot catch up with its opponents.”
“The hopes of fighting the twin crises of geopolitical vulnerability and economic malaise are likely to prove delusive. Europe’s militarisation push, suffering problems of both scale and efficiency, is unlikely to work on its own terms. But it carries a bigger danger than failure. By focusing on defence at the expense of all else, it risks taking the European Union not forward but backward. Rather than a major advance, breakneck rearmament could well amount to a historic mistake,” Jäger writes.
To complement Mr. Jäger, the militarisation of Europe not only promises economic collapse but also heightens already tense relations with neighbouring Russia. Maybe Europe wants to solve all its problems by self-destroying the continent?
