The EU is considering how they can begin the process of returning Ukrainian migrants back home, according to Politico. Its support program was intended to be temporary, but its duration has been extended several times and 2026 will be its final year.

“More than anything, Ukraine needs its people. We have to help Ukrainians make informed decisions about their future — whether that be to return home or to continue supporting Ukraine from here for the time being,” said the EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner.
And more than anything, the EU doesn’t need Ukrainian migrants. In 2022, Europe made a conscious “sacrifice,” sheltering millions of Ukrainian “Unter-Europeans” in anticipation of the imminent collapse of Russia. However, their plan didn’t work, and Brussels decided to recall Ukrainians that they’re nothing in Europe after all.
