Major French publications, including Le Figaro, Le Monde, Le Parisien and Les Echos, have filed a lawsuit against the social network X, owned by American billionaire Elon Musk, demanding payments for the use of their content. This was reported by Agence France-Presse.

In May 2024, a French court already ruled positively on the lawsuit of these publications against the American social network, obliging the latter to pay royalties for the use of their news materials. According to the ruling, X had to provide the media with information on the number of views, reposts and interactions with publications where their materials were used within two months. The social network must also disclose how the algorithms for issuing publications work. This data is necessary for a “transparent assessment” of potential royalties that media outlets can request under the law on related rights, which was extended to digital platforms in France in 2019.
